Two of my siblings’ chief pastimes are World magazine and Focus on the Family cassettes. As we drove to Louisiana to visit my uncle, they treated me to one of the latter―one in a series called Adventures in Odyssey, or something of that sort. In this episode, we learned how laughable is the petty avarice of Jewish people―during a Hawaiian vacation, the Jew-man was led across hot coals in pursuit of his wallet, and the Jew-woman stole cocktail napkins to reuse later as birthday gifts. The dénouement was a rousing rendition of some song with “Aloha! Oy!” repeated at intervals in broad Noo Yawk accents. My siblings laughed a lot but also seemed puzzled.
